As I lay with my head in your lap, camerado,
The confession I made I resume — what I said to you in the open air I resume:
I know I am restless, and make others so;
I know my words are weapons, full of danger, full of death;
For I confront peace, security, and all the settled laws, to unsettle them;
I am more resolute because all have denied me, than I could ever have been had all accepted me;
I heed not, and have never heeded either experience, cautions, majorities, or ridicule;
And the threat of what is called hell is little or nothing to me;
And the lure of what is called heaven is little or nothing to me;
Dear camerado! I confess I have urged you onward with me, and still urge you, without the least idea what is our destination,
Or whether we shall be victorious, or utterly quelled and defeated.

I feel very connected with this piece. We studied Whitman's work in 11th Grade English, but we didn't really delve into the deep end. I love the flow of words, and bitter love throughout.

This poem is strong though I'm still dissecting it, I know enough to know that his voice macerated through the words and something absolute resulted in it. ABSOLUTELY a beautiful write...and I've found in just three days that my love for Walt Whitman's work is growing--Ann

Beautiful, it's nice to discover a poet I, until now, had never heard of, and then to realise I was missing out on so much....

I absolutely adore this poem. It is strong, it is beautiful, and it is resolute. I am surprised no one else has commented on this amazing write before, it is now one of my favorites and I am thrilled to have found it.
