Music and Memory

Enchantress, touch no more that strain!
I know not what it may contain,
But in my breast such mood it wakes
My very spirit almost breaks.
Thoughts come from out some hidden realm
Whose dim memorials overwhelm,
Still bring not back the things I lost,—
Still bringing all the pain they cost.

The poet talks of so much pain, and the memories are brought back by a piece of music. Music has that power to evoke, make one reflect, be happy or sad. It's a very powerful tool. This poem touches this subject well.

yes, music can bring memories and feelings like few other things, pictures and words..the feeling of being near someone. And as time rolls on and people leave and come into our lives these feelings and music can simply overwhem a moment...so true...wonderful poetry here...PK

    Jim said it well.
Music works in different ways when it brings back memories to us.
Am not familiar with this author, but liked this poem very much.

They say "music hath charms to sooth....." but it also has power to hurt with its evokation of old memories.
    Albee expresses this well.
