The Splendor Falls

The splendor falls on castle walls
And snowy summits old in story:
The long light shakes across the lakes
And the wild cataract leaps in glory.
Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying,
Blow, bugle; answer, echoes dying, dying, dying.

O hark, O hear! how thin and clear,
  And thinner, clearer, farther going!
O sweet and far from cliff and scar
The horns of Elfland faintly blowing!
Blow, let us hear the purple glens replying,
Blow, bugle; answer, echoes dying, dying, dying.

O love they die in yon rich sky,
They faint on hill or field, or river:
Our echoes roll from soul to soul,
  And grow forever and forever.
Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying,
And answer, echoes, answer, dying, dying, dying.

    Great Poem

Great Poem!!! I love the imagery. You can just imagine this castle on a hill in all its splendor! It is no wonder that Tennyson is considered the greatest British poet of all time.

I know how to sing this poem. It was originally a poem, you all know that, but then people started singing it as a song. I learned it in choir. It is very beautiful and sad. I'm not into poetry, but I love this one.

Bugles must have been the CNN of his day; as war or news of war continues ad infinitum

I would have to say that he was living in a very unhappy country at the time.

I like your poem it is very interesting, gives a deep meaning of what you think and your feelings on this subject. You have shown effort and great creativity. I prefer your work over many others and think you are a great writer. Keep up the good work! When you reread something you have written, sometimes trying to make it sound differently or another kind of punctuation can help influence the poetic triumph you have just made.

Al writes some pretty amazing stuff - almost makes me want to rhyme again...but, I will resist the temptation and continue to write in the 21st century. Thanks for posting this.

    Exceptional

This only proves that the oldies but goodies are still very valid today and can be appreciated. Whoever put this up in a featured poem did all of us a favor and showed us what a great poet Tennyson was and we could do worse to read him closely. I agree with Arkhayne and that The Charge of the Light Brigade is one of my favorites as well as other.

Excellent piece, thanks for putting this up Kevin. I really enjoy Tennyson. Some of my other favorites are Break, Break, Break, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Kraken, and who can forget the Lotos Eaters.

    Timeless

This poem has a timeless quality about it - something mystical - a beautiful echo. It flows with ease from beginning to end and made me feel like singing along! Very well-written indeed - thanks for the opportunity to share in this gem!
