Life Is Fine

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
I might've sunk and died.

But it was      Cold in that water!      It was cold!

I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn't a-been so high
I might've jumped and died.

But it was      High up there!      It was high!

So since I'm still here livin',
I guess I will live on.
I could've died for love—
But for livin' I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry—
I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Life is fine!      Fine as wine!      Life is fine!

I think this poem is so inspiring. It lets its readers know that it is the things we go through that makes us stronger. No matter what we go through we must push on...there is always a reason to fight through

    the poem life is fine

    From guest tinkiemickey (contact)
i think the poem means that someon ewas trying to go with the flow of peer pressure but the pressure was so strong that he just let himself be carried. when he tried to speak out for the first time he was brave, and on the second time he was weak and couldnt do anything about it. yet he figures that the whole ituation actually helped him grow as a person so he sort of thanks his peers.plus there are so many pressures on him, from his family, theyre telling him you will die for us right? hes like ill die when im ready so this is his way of letting go of all his pressuress

I never read this one and this is awesome, it speaks to me in volumes!!! The last stanza

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry—
    I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Thats right I'm still breathing even thought they tried to cut me down and take me out!!! I wish my ex could read this!!!!!!! If not the whole thing at least the last stanza!!!!!

This is the first time Ive read his work- It is so good!
It describes exactly the force of the will to live. Even when someone thinks they want to end it, there is that invisible lifeforce inside that somehow holds u back saying 'NO'- just my opinion.
    Fantastically written, I love it

Life is for the living, with all its ups and downs. You may see me die, but I hope you are patient, I am not in a hurry. Love this poem, its a beauty.

Langston Hughes is my favorite poet. This is one of his finest work. This piece was relevant back then, just as much as it is now.

First time reading this poem - what a breath of fresh air it is! No matter what this man is going to live -not so much for himself but for those he loves.
A good lesson here - no matter how difficult life can and will become there is always a reason to see it through. Uplifting poem. Von

okay...I think I get why he wrote "if the water hadn't a-been so cold..." I didn't get it at first, but now I think I do. Did he just mean that as his wake up call? That it jolted him, like a slap across the face? Hm...still don't think I quite get this poem. Still like it, though

It is a great poem and always will be. I dont think Langston could have written it any better. An awesome use of words as well as positioning them. Langston Hughes must have been a great and intelligent man in his days. If he were still around today i'd want to meet him.

Hues was a man of integrity who knew his heart and that love was stronger than fear. Rigorous honesty kept him that way.

I absolutely love Langston Hughes! His work is amazing and I am so inspired by him. This poem is really good because he's saying that he will live life no matter what happens to him. Everyone should feel that way!

Such a lovely flow to this poem. Hughes was truly great back in his time and he still is. I've always liked his poetry, such a hint of truth and a bit of musical bounce in them.

This is a GR8 example of why Hughes is one of America's...no, the World's great poets.
Very accessible style of writing = more readers. Or it should, anyway.
