omen of emptiness

The clock has turned enough
to reach a planet
Life is endless night
I hear wings beating in
the dark of my room
A giant Raven is waiting –

for me to fall asleep.

In the dark hours of night, or early morning, the time does seem to be dragging on at a different rate and yes! sometimes there are raven's waiting to pounce provided the ogres in the cupboard don't get me first.
Another fine poem from the pen of a master writer.

Spike Milligan's words have always found a way to my heart, whether they be words of laughter or truth. Yet it is his poetry that reaches into the depth of my soul. He is sadly missed but his words will live on forever. This is one poem of his that has escaped my notice until now. What a beautiful gift to find this here.

Spike's depression is well known, it took up a huge part of his life. He's made a differance to a lot of people by raising awareness about depression; he recognised it as an illogical disease and fought it with controlled thinking. Don't think its a death raven, closer to the "dark whale of the night" Leunig used in a few cartoons. Must have liked edgar allen poe's imagery. Most great comedy comes from tragedy, its a way of pointing out the absurdity. "I told you I was ill!" Spike's so awesome.

I think Spike was expecting death to claim him. He was a comedian by profession but I sense a dark depression took a lot of joy from his life. As you say Von, 'unable to sleep, perhaps afraid to sleep.'

This is so deep. Spike, I think, is trying to explain how his mind works at times, through his dark depressive days and nights. Unable to sleep, perhaps afraid to sleep.....
