Spirits Of The Dead

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tombstone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dewdrop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

    to touch up gallows gates wherein looks upon the grim reaper himself and smile while doing it.
    Interesting perspectives!
    Keep penning on one stroke at a time!

    I love to write poetry, but I've never taken the time to read it. This is really the first poem that I've read on my own, and I am awe inspired. There is such a depth to it that cannot be explained. Edgar's words are amazingly put.

    Someties I really wonder about life. I honestly dont have very many belifs,and Death and Heaven isnt among them. Im honestly not scared of dying,because I cant comprehend dying. I dont have anything to be scared of as far as I know. This poem does make me wonder about what can happen. But the last stanza,I dunno,call me stupid,but it just always makes me think of the moon. I dunno,that could just be my stupidity. Thats just what it may mean to me.

    i love this poem, i read this when i feel lonely in my solitude. i think to myself, will there be other souls there when i die, sometimes i question my own beliefs and think that we die then it's over, but surely that can't be the case. or what is the point?

    Life is the 'mystery of mysteries' and in each life each breath we all grow to a betterment or a depravity. That is the way life is, can't touch the silk without first touching the paper.
