I died for Beauty — but was scarce

I died for Beauty — but was scarce
Adjusted in the Tomb
When One who died for Truth, was lain
In an adjoining room —

He questioned softly "Why I failed"?
"For Beauty", I replied —
"And I — for Truth — Themself are One —
We Brethren, are", He said —

And so, as Kinsmen, met a Night —
We talked between the Rooms —
Until the Moss had reached our lips —
And covered up — our names —

I love Emily! I hope you read, "Alabaster Heart," which is my tribute to this incredible poet! Thank you for sharing this with us! Can't get enough of Emily. What a sad life she lived. Can't imagine! Yet, I believe she's up there smiling down on us, because we share her legacy. This is wonderful!--Kel

Emily has always been one of my favorite poets, as her poems usually take a surprising twist at the end. I tried my hand at writing in her style with my poem "Old Man Winter" but I'm afraid I will never quite match her wit. If I'm not mistaken, she is another one of those great writers whose brilliance wasn't recognized until after she passed on - what a pity. It just goes to show that the critics don't always know everything.

This is, I think, my favorite poem. Not just of Emily Dickinson's, but of all the poems I've ever read. Whether she was agreeing with Keats or making fun of him, I don't care. On this poem, you can look at it as a cynic or a true believer that Beauty is Truth. I personally think that what she's trying to say is that Truth is not always beautiful, because Death is Truth, and it's not beautiful. Anyway, I just love this poem - so much that I wrote a story inspired by it.
