A Dream

In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light
       Hath left me broken-hearted.

Ah! what is not a dream by day
To him whose eyes are cast
On things around him with a ray
       Turned back upon the past?

That holy dream- that holy dream,
While all the world were chiding,
Hath cheered me as a lovely beam
       A lonely spirit guiding.

What though that light, thro' storm and night,
       So trembled from afar-
What could there be more purely bright
       In Truth's day-star?

I love the rhyming and I think I could write like him with alittle practice. I am trying to learn from him and I wish that I could write like him. I am learning this from aspiring poets. I would rank this awesome.

I know this poem by heart, I have preformed it I know it I love it. I couldn't help but recite it before I read it just to make sure I still knew it.

OF course as much as I love this poem I have a true love for, 'the conquerer worm.' Which I preformed rather recently.

E.A POE is one of the most complex writer.''HE CAN CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE FULL OF HORROR,TERROR,STRANGE FANTASIES AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ABNRMALITIES''Well one can also find his stories very interesting atleast i like his style.

You have to love poe's insight. he is truely an insperation. Who else can capture the imagineation like he can? From his storys to his poetry he makes the mind jump with fright and cringe at the morbid. My fav poem is The Sleeper it is truely a work of art.

Edgar Allan Poe truly had a very dark way of writing about things. As much as I enjoy his works, I often find myself taking breaks or I get the feel of a dark cloud looming overhead. He is without a doubt one of the masters.

I think this might be the only one that does not include death but I am no expert on Poe, as much as I like his work. *sighs* I wish I had his talent for writing and expressing himself through it. Oh well. On with my own writing!

I agree 120% with -LoneWolf-. He had such a different way of expressing his thoughts. He was so deep and dark.. no one can possibly do a better job then him.

Such a nice illusion on the world, as if we are all living in a dream, a dream of idealistic worlds. Yet, underneath it is all a nightmare. Now Poe has to be on my favourite list!

I liked this poem of his. He wrote beautifully, although sadly. I found this poem very dark and yet also very sad. The 'waking dream' to me was life- life is a dream, or can be a nightmare. The 'storm and night' to me was like dark emotion or even sadness.

I really relate to where he talks about daytime being a dream for some--those whose eyes see past their surroundings into the past (or for some, elsewhere)... Poe is a master of the written word.

Poe is and will always be my all-time favorite poet. He was a master! He had a brilliant knack with words. Many of his poems flow like songs. He had a keen knowledge of proper use of repetition to emphasize and set the tone...as he demonstrates briefly here. (a better example would be "The Raven".)

I agree with some of the comments above. It seems the poor man could not solace..even in his dreams. Yes, death must have been quite a savior for him. Elaina

The first verse of this poem was the most significant and impacting to me. It just spoke volumes of unspoken pain and regret, and definitely longing. The rest is well written with, as usual, beautiful rhyming. Once again, I wish I could have known what he truly thought behind this write.

    very deep

"What though that light, thro' storm and night,
    So trembled from afar-
What could there be more purely bright
    In Truth's day-star? "
This poem is too deep and amazing; just think what will be the state of mind of dreams come true. What dreams foretell us. This is very metaphysical. I love this style.

    THE BEST!!!

I love all of Poe's work. He is a master in his time and in ours. Nobody can write like him. (Well maybe that's a good thing!) I really like this poem, just because it puts you in a trance when you read it, it also makes you want to read it over and over again.

This truly is one of my fave's but you can feel the underlying torture, the poor guy wasn't even finding sactuary in his dreams. everyone speak of him and wishs him alive today. in my mind death was his savior, allow him that much.

this is like an interesting poem,
What though that light, thro' storm and night,
    So trembled from afar-
What could there be more purely bright
    In Truth's day-star?
that rocks no doubt, why the hell is this guy dead?
he is like a genious writing poems.

I just really like the verse of the first:

In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light
    Hath left me broken-hearted.

The rhyme to me is perfect, the rest I think fail to meet to those standards, but, over-all is still a good piece.

another one of my alltime favs..Poe is awesome. I wish I could have known him! Too bad he didn't live in this time, like be my neighbor or something! *joking* his poems would prolly be much different if he were a live today instead of living & dying so long ago.....did any of that make sense? oh well..take me for what i mean not what i say...or sumthin like that!~
