Eldorado

Gaily bedight,
                  A gallant knight,
              In sunshine and in shadow,
                  Had journeyed long,
                  Singing a song,
              In search of Eldorado.

                  But he grew old-
                  This knight so bold-
And o'er his heart a shadow
                  Fell as he found
                  No spot of ground
              That looked like Eldorado.

                  And, as his strength
                  Failed him at length,
              He met a pilgrim shadow-
                  "Shadow," said he,
                  "Where can it be-
              This land of Eldorado?"

                  "Over the Mountains
                  Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
                  Ride, boldly ride,"
                  The shade replied-
              "If you seek for Eldorado!"

One of my favourite poems! Such a wonderfully written piece! This was the first poem I read by Poe when I was younger, back then I just loved the rhyme and rhythem, but after reading more of Poe's work, and as I grew, I saw more depth. Now I adore Poe's poetry, this being one of my favourites! xx

One of my favorite poems by Poe. It's beautifully done. And the beat is constant. It sent shiver done my spine the first time I read it.

One of Poe's best poems. I agree, so good it can't be described.

This poem was the one that got me hooked on poe. I committed it to memory when I was ten years old. I still go back and read it often when I feel the need for something familiar. I love how he can take a story, and tell it in less words yet in a far more captivating and memorable way than if he had made it a short story.

Another of Poe's strange, lovely, yet amazingly simple poems. One sees alot of similarity in his work, yet now and then, it is evident that he was divinly inspired. If you liked this, by all means see his To One in Paradise, To Helen, The Raven, and Anabelle Lee.
