To My Mother

Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother,"
Therefore by that dear name I long have called you-
You who are more than mother unto me,
And fill my heart of hearts, where Death installed you
In setting my Virginia's spirit free.
My mother- my own mother, who died early,
Was but the mother of myself; but you
Are mother to the one I loved so dearly,
And thus are dearer than the mother I knew
By that infinity with which my wife
Was dearer to my soul than its soul-life.

Absolutely beautiful. A very sentamental and personal piece, a grim and sad reminder of how it feels to lose something that you hold so dear. Rest well, Mr. Poe, God speed your poor soul.

Everybody else finds this poem to be 'uplifting.' Perhaps I've missed something. . . while it is a wonderful tribute. . . and possibly hinting to an eulogy. . . I still find it rather glib, as most of Poe's writings. Considering his life, however, I do believe he is entitled to an eternity of depressing poetry.

Dude, this poem rocks. Its really strange to read something happy by Poe though, and it always comes as a shock to read this one in particular. Poe,you have done an awesome job. Get reincarnated and get famous so I can read more of your stuff(okok,im kidding,i know that sounds insane everyone) but this poem rocks. Its happy, and it serves to remind me that not only do mothers come in many forms, but also that not every soul is totally unhappy and depressed.

More than anything,I think he's speaking about the deaths and love he has for all of the women that died in his life...His wife,Mother..and his step-Mother.

    It was a beautiful poem.

This is wonderful and so unlike almost everything else we know of Poe's work that it is truly astounding. I am grateful to the person who uncovered and posted it.

Never mind my previous IM. Just noticed now that it is supposed to be a public domain poem , in which case it does not apply to any of the questions I had asked . Sorry for my ignorance

    do not touch it

This was no doubt a wonderful tribute . But I am a little confused and maybe you would not mind explaining to me. I read a couple of times , but still can not quite get it. It is obviously not about your own mother.......and there is where my confusion comes in , is it about your mother in law { and your wife Virginia passed away } or is it about your wife { and a daughter named Virginia passed away } Regardless of what the answer is , the poem deserves an A+ , but an answer to me would be somuch appreciated. I am one of these people that will be driven insane trying to get it figured out
    Respect,
    Reenie
