A great poem, even though it slightly bothers me that it seems to be so popular. It's not the darkest I've read, as to me it seems it has a slight apathy to it, and a comic quality.
The only possible fault I see here is the first line of the second stanza, or line seven, "Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,". It seems to me it would've been a lot better if it read "Ah, distinctly I remember it was late in bleak December,", though if the poem was about a specific event that might be a lie. But this poem is still among my favorites, and might very well be my favorite. -

I love this poem. It's so elegant, yet at the same time so dark. It is also very like human nature i think. How we become angree at inatament objects, animals, ect. when we feel guilty or when bad things happen. This is why i love Poe, he really captuers the essence of the human dark side. But he does it so elegantly, he doesn't need swear words to portray anger of fear. -

I'm currently memorizing this ('m on stanza six).
The Raven, of course, is a highly praised poem here on AP (go figure) but rightly so. What's most masterful about this poem, in my eyes, is its metrical accuracy.
It's not my favorite poem, but I can clearly see why it's a classic. -
Still my favorite
What I love about Edgar Allan Poe's work, especially in this poem is that almost all of them seem to have a dark feeling, even if it is describing something happy it still feels dark. There always seems to be that feeling of death hanging in the air. I can feel this poem, the fire that he is sitting by, I can hear the raven repeating "nevermore" and I can smell the combanation of smoke from the fire and death and lonelyness. -

This is one of my alltime favorite old poems and is what got me started writing poetry. I love the rhyming and the visual image...he uses a LOT of big confusing words but just the same it is great...It seemed like at the end the devil (raven) had his soul...with the last few lines....

Yes, The Raven.. Edgar Allan Poe is such a genuis. I said the same thing on another poets poem I think it was one of Tolkein's. Edgar Allan Poe, was a madman and he was a genuis at the same time. This poem shows us how ingenuis poe was. And I loved "The Tell Tale Heart" That was one of Poe's best works in my opinion. Even thou he has passed, I still worship his poetry because of the great writer that he is!

How prophetic this poem must have seemed to him once his dear wife Virginia eventually died. She was of course quite ill during his time of writing and perhaps her illness was the driving force behind this. Incredible so it is, the story itself is a painful one and only now with the benefit of hindsight and history books do we know how painful it must have been for him.
Wonderful story, so poignant but riveting.

Wow, my friend suggested this poem to me, and I honestly didn't think I would like it, but I really did! I'm not a big fan of poems as long as this, but this kept me interested. I thought it was kind of funny how, by the end, the narrarator seemed to be going crazy, shouting, carrying on, and the raven sat, calm, saying only one word. And also, I'm amazed at how many words rhyme with "more"!

The structure, rhyming scheme etc of this is faultless, but I have always failed to see why people gush over it so much. I have read so many other poems that measure up to The Raven with regards to the form and out do it in every other aspect. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea :-) but it has never struck me as a literary masterpiece. It's good, don't get me wrong, just not amazing.

We read this in English class yesterday! I really enjoyed reading this piece, first my teacher had this piece read aloud to us, then she had us draw a picture of what we thought was going on. This piece fascinated me so much, THE RAVEN, is such a famous piece, I am so amazed by Poe's wonderful work, thanks for sharing Mr. Poe, all my wishes for you in your next life...Thanks!

I haven't read very many of Poe's poems, as I've generally been more interested in his short stories, but like what everyone else here has said, this is easily one of Poe's finest writings, if not the best he ever came up with in his short life. It's a shame his life was one of such sadness at times, but I suppose you could say the by-product of that would be that we've been blessed by such wonderful poetry and stories.

Until two years ago I'd never even heard of Edgar Allan Poe - frightening to say the least. All I did was look up 'goth poetry' lmao
Needless to say I read "Lenore" first. I loved it. Two weeks later I thought I'd look up this Edgar person and see what else he'd written. The Raven intrigued me - I love the birds (cheeky buggers). I read it. Has anyone noticed the connection between the poem Lenore and the poem The Raven (nevermind the fact that Lenore was mentioned in the Raven. Even had she not had a mention - we may have lost the rhyme indeed - but even so the poems seem very connected!) Just me rambling on about E A Poe ... I do so love the Raven! An outstanding piece of work! A definite inspiration for aspiring poets!

Wow! I can see it's as popular as I already knew it was by the amount of comments, and I'll be the first to say this poem was amazing! This is a really dark poem which could be interpreted in many ways, to me the Raven represents the Grim Reaper- it is such a dark bird and the knocking and lines 'soul from out that shadow' could represent death- the shadow being life. This is an amazing work by Poe, I finally got the chance to see what the fuss was about and I agree, he wrote this wonderfully. I like the use of internal rhyme as well. He was a poetic genius! (can you say that after one poem? I think I can!)

this is a great example of poe and his tendencies of being a dark romantic to show his audience exactly what presides within the human mind. the raven in this poem represents more than a simple bird who speaks to a man in an erie all knowing manner. poe uses this raven to represent the darkness of the human mind. this is most apparent because of the fact that this raven appears to anger the main character of this poem with the simple reptition of "nevermore". why? because it is this repitition that reminds the main character that he shall nevermore be with his lenore. and it is the reminder that eats away at him, not to mention the fact that no other characters are introduced within this poem, this clearly shows that only the main character can see this raven, therefore only the main character can see the darkness of loneliness within his own mind.

I always wondered what could be s great about one poem and it took me alot longer then it should have for me to realize Poe's genius. I would really like to know the story behind this peice, what compelled him to write it and how long it took. At first i just looked at how incredibly long this poem was but didnt notice the length while reading it. It has a flow that can never be copied and an idea that is felt every day. It gives you shivers really. and yet its not just creepers cheepers, it actaully has a story, it has a history. you dont fully understand him from it, but it makes you wish to. I really really love this poem. I love all his works and only wish he had gotten what he was due while he was still alive. he was probly the best poet of time, as far as im concerened. love this poem and think everyone should read it!

love this thing! just like all his other work, my favorite is annabel lee, but raven rocks too...man was genious...
