Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
        Gone far away into the silent land;
        When you can no more hold me by the hand,
    Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
    Remember me when no more day by day
        You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
        Only remember me; you understand
    It will be late to counsel then or pray.
    Yet if you should forget me for a while
      And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
      For if the darkness and corruption leave
      A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
  Better by far you should forget and smile
      Than that you should remember and be sad.

    This is the first poem I memorized. It is beautifully written, and when I needed it the most after a loved one passed, permeates my soul today. The last two lines sums it up completely. Masterfully crafted with the best advice!

    Good? You have underestimated this woman gravely. This poem is a masterpiece, one of the best to come out of the last 200 years, coming from one of the top ten poets in the history of poetry. This poem is sweet, giving, and absolutely beautiful.

    It's amazing that a poem with death as it's main focus can sound so sweetly on the ears.

    A sad yet selfless thought captured in this poem. It seems we want to hold onto those we love and sometimes just forget that they may be suffering to stay and comfort us rather than staying alive to enjoy life. A moving write and a timeless sentiment. ~genielassie~

    This is a very beautiful poem and actually inspired the creation of a song called "treasure", written by Robert Smith and performed by his band, the Cure, in 1996. Interesting little tidbit! Give it a listen, it is an amazing song!
