Once, when I was young and true,
Someone left me sad-
Broke my brittle heart in two;
And that is very bad.
Love is for unlucky folk,
Love is but a curse.
Once there was a heart I broke;
And that, I think, is worse.

This is a very cute song...like Robert Burns "o!Once I lov'd a bonie lass,
Ay, and I love her still;
And whilst that virtue warms my breast,
I'll love my handsome Nell.
As bonie lasses I hae seen,
And mony full as braw;
But, for a modest gracefu' mein,
The like I never saw.”
Though the second stanza seems to be a little awkward with the statement "love is a curse" but the beauty of the stanza is this because with this the author wants to say that as she has broken someone’s heart when he was in love with her...so she criticize “love” for that unpleasant event. The overall effect of the rhyme is superb.

Sardonic I find philophant's comment. As if he has a hatred for Dorothy Parker .. it seems so to me.
Love is an emotion that always turns negative for most or all people. If there are people out there, even after a death, don't feel any negative emotions contributed to Love then they are very rare.
'Love is for unlucky folk'
So true So true.
A nice small song that Parker has written here. I am sure it 'sings' well.
