A cicada shell

A cicada shell;
it sang itself

    cicadas come in a seven year cycle. the shells that are on the ground, or trees, seen while the shrilling reverbarates, are semi-transperent. the very air vibrates with the sound, the image of the sound moving the bug from the casing to the trees is wonderful. I note that Basho was 16 years old when he wrote this, according to the dates given. Yet the essay about his life suggests he did not write until much later in his life. Enigmatic.

    1660 Reference removed. No reliable date found but possibly in his earliest publication approx 1680.

    Powerhouse Haiku,Bravo!

    One can certainly see the possibility of vibes reverberation making the poet's message possible. It's a humorous piece/Haiku.

    Ah, one of my favorite Basho verses. The simplicity, directness of image, and deeper thought that force the reader to apply the verse to him/herself.

    Wow....this leaves me speechless! This has some wonderful imagery and flow of thoughts penned down in the most finest way. Very pretty and this makes me feel like I'm seeing a pretty dream. I like how the words are placed and the spacing done in L3. I love L2. This haiku truly has an "Aha" moment to it!!! This is one of my favourites from the Master!

    Cicadas are a yearly occurance in Queensland Australia. some years tolerable - others - can send you to the brink of madness with their automatic switching on and switching off. Their empty shells scattered over tree trunks, plants and limbs of trees, shells that have been sung utterly away!!

    And they are coming again in the spring of 2004. I remember the last time, back in '87 I believe it was. They were everywhere. Trees, grass, bushes, covering the sidewalks a stray would sort of fly down and land on my arm, and the noise. I was annoyed by them and then I was talking to the elderly man up the street who told me stories about his life which ran in cycles along with the cicadas and how that cycle would probably be his last one unless he lived to be 105. This was cute.
