He's on the porch

He's on the porch,
to escape the wife and kids—
how hot it is!

I feel that he's on the porch smoking a cigarette or even a pipe or perhaps opium -- who knows. But I feel that's what he's doing to get away from his family.

A nice piece that Buson has written here.

Ah but the real question is, where is that heat coming from? Is it outside on the porch with him or back inside with the wife and kids? or worse yet, both?
That's the fun of a good contemporary haiku, it leaves so much open for interpretation while at the same time providing a vivid piece of imagery or an interesting look into life, like this one does.

Why did he not say, "He's on the porch...to escape the fate he prepared for himself?" On the other hand, this is only a picture, an observation. I can't really get more out of this than he will give me...
