A Child's Amaze

SILENT and amazed, even when a little boy,
I remember I heard the preacher every Sunday put God in his
        statements,
As contending against some being or influence.

Reminiscing to the moments past, Walt Whitman wrote this piece with such strength and beauty. There is imagery, a sense of actually being the person feeling such emotions, and the lingering feeling of wanting to hear more. I am so sorry to say that this is the first of Walt's pieces that I have ever read, though I am glad that I have. May his writings be remembered through history and be brought to life through AllPoetry!

This brings back years when I was younger and I just thought of God as a child. This poem just fine. I have to read more in this poetry and hopefully to learn.

I love the line about putting God into his statements, as if God is an ingredient that can be added or subtracted as necessary.

O! Such a wonderful thought in few words...i remember when I wz a child I thought that there is no God but someone who is not wise believe that there is something like God. Its a difficult subject...many people believe that they believe in God but when they are alone....they incline to think that there is something wrong with there believe...they believe because people believe that they believe...well...this is a nice poem...logic is a never ending story...

    interesting

I heard the preacher every Sunday
    put God in his statements,
As contending against some being or influence.

What an effect this must have been on a child to hear every week that god was working (contending) against beings or influences.

You can take a child you church but can you make him listen?

Interesting, as he compared a Priest as one against God, "contending against some being or influence". Also interesting on how it's more of a recolection than poetry, and yet it is so poetic in nature.

Wow. This is soo short, but so powerful. Full of emotion. It's almost as if you are he, remembering, thinking back to that time. That's how powerful the vision is. Absolutely fantastic!
