Empty are the ways,
Empty are the ways of this land
And the flowers
Bend over with heavy heads.
They bend in vain.
Empty are the ways of this land
Where Ione
Walked once, and now does not walk
But seems like a person just gone.

This poem has a personal, reflective quality to it. Nature suffers with the poet.

There is some speculation that "lone" was the name of a French ballet dancer (Ione de Forest)that Pound had an affair with. If so, this context does make sense in the reading of the poem, especially with the mention of "A PERSON" just gone.
