It's Ours

there is always that space there
just before they get to us
that space
that fine relaxer
the breather
while say
flopping on a bed
thinking of nothing
or say
pouring a glass of water from the
spigot
while entranced by
nothing

that
gentle pure
space

it's worth

centuries of
existence

say

just to scratch your neck
while looking out the window at
a bare branch

that space
there
before they get to us
ensures
that
when they do
they won't
get it all

ever.

I read all these poems from sixteen year olds who want to kill themselves because their daddy fucked them or their girl friend won't fuck them or whatever. All of them asking "Why should I go on". Than I read this poem and all those questions are answered. If the simple fact of living at it's most basic simple level isn't enough to keep you going than you are truly lost.

One of Solsanytzin's characters talks about how being in the gulag was so spiritually rewarding for him. I understand this also. Sometimes you need to have everything taken away so that you see what you really have. Personally I keep going because I am looking forward to the next chance I get to take a piss. It feels so good.

If Bukowski only wrote this poem it would be enough!!!

    i agree...

with Muted. Just enjoy the poetry, if you find meaning, then great, if not then just keep reading.
By the way, this poem does mean a lot to me. That Space AKA Spacing out, is a time where you are alone with your thoughts and your thought aren't hindered by anyone else's input.

I hate it when people analyze a poem down to nothing; this should just be drunken in -- of course this could mean anything -- that's blatanly obvious..but there doesn't seem to be a lot of appreciation here.

This is an up-in-the-air piece to me. I mean I could state it's literal and not metaphorical or state that it is metaphorical and not literal or both or none at all and just walk away with my impression (which is probably what I will do anyway) but I feel there's a deeper meaning to this and I may be wrong, I may be right, but either course I feel, in the end, it doesn't really matter.
