Some one came knocking
At my wee, small door;
Someone came knocking;
I'm sure-sure-sure;
I listened, I opened,
I looked to left and right,
But nought there was a stirring
In the still dark night;
Only the busy beetle
Tap-tapping in the wall,
Only from the forest
The screech-owl's call,
Only the cricket whistling
While the dewdrops fall,
So I know not who came knocking,
At all, at all, at all.

Memory

I learned this poem in Junior school. That was in the early 1960s and it was nice to be reminded of those days when I found Someone again. -

My 6 year old daughter needed to memorize and recite a poem for school. I gave her this poem and she learned it easily. Teachers in school were impressed. :-) -

I learnt this poem years ago in Scotland. My mother used to SING it. Apparently, one of the radio shows put it to song. Anyway I still remember the plaintive tune and have taught the song and poem to my children when they were little. It will be passed on to the next generations. -
at last i have found it again

I was taught this by my grandma in the 1950's and always loved it. My grandma was an drama and elocution teacher but I have no idea what happened to her vast collection of poetry books after she died. Now my granddaughter is interested in poetry including this one. -

So happy I bumped into Walter de la Mare while searching in Wikipedia. That got me looking for this poem. Remember reciting this about 40 years ago when I was going to school in Hong Kong - somehow I thought the poem was m-u-c-h longer! Thanks! -

Mymum taught me this before I could read - I remember trying to write it out for her from memory, before I could spell properly. The screech owls became 'squash owls' and the subject of a long-running family joke! -

I learnt this poem when I was very little. That was when I realized there was more than one specie of owl, and that cricket was an insect and not just a game. It made me conscious of the living world around. I felt very nostalgic. -
I can't believe my luck. Have searched for this little poem which I learned at Gunnedah in the 1950's and was delighted to finally find it. It's only short but still has the ability to enchant and cast it's spell. Anyone else remember this from school.

This is one of the most simple and melodious rhymes by the wonderful poet Mare. the mood of the poem is lyrical but it contains the logical subject of music of Nature as well...one node I would like to add in this natural orchestra...the heart beat...the drum beat of the lung bubbles and the beat of the eye lashes. This is such an innocent expression that at first reading one can enjoy it as a nursery rhyme.
