A Song of an Autumn Night

Under the crescent moon a light autumn dew
Has chilled the robe she will not change —
And she touches a silver lute all night,
Afraid to go back to her empty room.

I think this is a poem about having met a lover. She doesn't want to change because she can still smell his scent on her robe but he has left her and it has grown cold. She is afraid to face the loneliness of her own room.

Perhaps she's in a structure type building, such as a gazebo, or the like. And in this structure she feels safe, under this crescent moon. She may feel unsafe in her room because it's so isolated and cold and perhaps she doesn't wish to change her robe for then she would be apart of that coldness.

    My interpretation.

The title seems to be a euphemism.

Under the crescent moon a light autumn dew The introduction, soft and delicate...prettily painting this picture

Has chilled the robe she will not change --
And she touches a silver lute all night,
Afraid to go back to her empty room.

Afraid to go back to her empty room...why afraid? I too am left wondering so much about this woman. I like how Wei left it open to reader interpretation.

    I agree with kasall...

The crescent moon is significant - the moon in general, in considering the role of women in society.
The fact that the moon is crescent though is significant.
The Autumn dew- gives the feeling of a cool night.
the robe and autumn together reveal colors- wines, deep golden yellows - in the evening light
    SHe must be outside-
and that she is with a silver lute-
does she play it? who does it belong to? why is she with this treasure?

why is she afraid to be alone?

this poem makes me wonder alot about this woman.
