My Greatest Need is You

Your hope in my heart is the rarest treasure
Your Name on my tongue is the sweetest word
My choicest hours
Are the hours I spend with You —
O Allah, I can't live in this world
Without remembering You—
How can I endure the next world
Without seeing Your face?
I am a stranger in Your country
And lonely among Your worshippers:
This is the substance of my complaint.

This is really intense. There is such longing and anguish, it seems almost painful. The emotion in this is almost palpable.

A wonderful spiritual poem, I think from a lost sheep rather than a devout worshipper, but a wonderful poem nonetheless. A very interesting read...thank you

With elogant words of deep feeling and love, that any lover would be pleased to hear directed at them, Rabia al Basri verbalises his adoration for his god, Allah. With beautiful word use and imagery he summonds up the vision of a perfect disciple.

This is sad, lonely, and dramatic. A goat amongst sheep.
