Some Time

Last night, my darling, as you slept,
  I thought I heard you sigh,
And to your little crib I crept,
  And watched a space thereby;
And then I stooped and kissed your brow,
  For oh! I love you so—
You are too young to know it now,
  But some time you shall know!

Some time when, in a darkened place
  Where others come to weep,
Your eyes shall look upon a face
  Calm in eternal sleep,
The voiceless lips, the wrinkled brow,
  The patient smile shall show—
You are too young to know it now,
  But some time you may know!

Look backward, then, into the years,
  And see me here to-night—
See, O my darling! how my tears
  Are falling as I write;
And feel once more upon your brow
  The kiss of long ago—
You are too young to know it now,
  But some time you shall know.

    Lovely write. Love will overspan time, and the touch of love will be the crown to wear even after death. Our children should have all a parent writing poetry on their hearts and souls.

    Thank you for featuring this poem.

    very sad, it brought a lump to my throat, the mother thinking of a time when she will not be there for her child. This is beautiful and sad and oh so full of love. It cannot fail to speak to a mothers heart.

    I read this a few times before I felt I could leave a comment.
    The parent going to the crib, then looking into the future when the parent dies and the child looks down on him. There is so much love in this poem, albeit rather sad that the parent doesn't seem able to enjoy this lovely moment as he watches his sleeping baby.
