ONE had a lovely face,
And two or three had charm,
But charm and face were in vain
Because the mountain grass
Cannot but keep the form
Where the mountain hare has lain.

I would not have understood the references in this piece when I was younger due to the fact it is talking about loose women, as they were called in those days. He is saying that no matter how charming or beautiful they are, they still have the imprint of the man that slept with them on them. This , in the days when men still valued virginity in a mate.
