When You Are Old

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

    I am so taken by the beauty of the second stanza. So many have loved her....but only one man REALLY knew her and loved her PILGRIM SOUL (her authentic self) and he loved her as she aged and you just get this feeling of security of someone always there loving her (even from a far) though that is the sad part, the last stanza, the missed opportunity, the letting him go bit. Just what it means to me here is all....ah @ someone loving my pilgrim soul!

    "LOVED THE SORROWS OFYOUR CHANGING FACE' SIMPLY touching.none can exhaust the meaning it can say. The line tells us how our words shud covey more thas it says.I bow down to this immortal soul.

    I love Yeats. He is one of my favorite British poets. This is my favorite of him. "And loved the sorrows of your changing face;" It's simply beautiful.
