It's no use
Mother dear, I
can't finish my
weaving
You may
blame Aphrodite
soft as she is
she has almost
killed me with
love for that boy

From guest damin snyder (contact)
I was wondering what the relationship between sappho and venus was if any? -
Even though it was written so long ago, most of us can relate to this. It makes me think of all the times that I've been too busy swooning over a boy to get anything done.

This poem has a touch of soft humor but still there is some thing missing, I suppose. The poem has another stanza as well. very nice poem.

Don't you just love poetry that has more beneath the surface then there could ever be at face value? Sappho is the master at this type of silken covering. I loved the gentle nature of this piece, not violent and seeming to lack the passion of other poets, while communicating a soft humor and a comfortable wit. Beneath the surface? I'll leave that thought to any who wish to ponder it.

Wow...this is just written so well... she conveys her emotions, her painful love in so few lines. Actually I thought all of Sappho's poetry was written for a female, I am rather surprised to hear of her love for a boy. This is a beautiful piece, very gentle, very emotional. Wow.

This is brilliant... yet sad and at the same time. I don't really find it cute, because "blame aphrodite" would have lead to a lot of torment when this was written. blame a god? in the 600's? I think not! Just a new spin to think about...

A very brilliant piece...it sort of had a soft flow to it, and it definitely was very humorous. Blame Aphrodite?
Definitely a very 'cute' (golly but there's got to be another word somewherein the dictionary to replace that much overused word to describe some poetry...) and humorous little piece.

nice...
This means the most to me in that little pause, you may...blame Aphrodite...soft as she is...
It shows the strength of the emotion and the truth of the fact that love is not all sweetness and light, as 'she has almost [almost!] killed me with love for that boy.'
I am almost certainly getting a meaning from it that Sappho did not put into the poem, because as she was from way back in bc, she would have respected the gods alot more. But I see this as sorta a 'damn, love really sucks sometimes, why did that b*tch Aphrodite have to make it so harsh?'
Good poem, I really like it... -
