That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune!
As fair thou art, my bonnie lass,
So deep in love am I:
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt with the sun;
I will luve thee still my dear,
When the sands of life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again , my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.
Notes
Standard english Translation
O, my love is like a red, red rose,
That is newly sprung in June.
O, my love is like the melody,
That is sweetly played in tune.
As fair are you, my lovely lass,
So deep in love am I,
And I will love you still, my Dear,
Till all the seas go dry.
Till all the seas go dry, my Dear,
And the rocks melt with the sun!
O I will love you still, my Dear,
While the sands of life shall run.
And fare you well, my only Love,
And fare you well a while!
And I will come again, my Love,
Although it were ten thousand mile!

From guest nurul (contact)
so beautiful poem. I have a task from my lecturer to analize this poem. anybody can help me?? -
-
It's a pretty standard song I think, it's meaning. Think of someone you love and speak of them in as poetic and romantic terms as you might choose, that is what Burns is doing.

I must say that I had to chuckle when I read the words "bonnie lass". I believe I've only heard those words on TV
.
I like the ending. In a lot of ways it reminds me of reincarnation with the way he's talking.

Often seen and heard in the English translation set to music by various artistes it is good to read the original Scots version.

for Amanda:
For Amanda:
The spelling is correct for Mr Burns. He was Scottish and wrote in the language and dialect of his time.
Further down the the page there is an standard English translation for you to read and perhaps understand more easily. why not do a comparions between the two and just see how many words are so much alike.

I really love this poem a lottttt it;s gentle, elegant with sty;lle and yes red roses are the prettiest in short it's wonderful writing -
Lasting love. . .
True, a rose has fleeting beauty, and a melody's loveliness may fade quickly from memory, but I believe Robert Burns meant just that. The woman so loved in this poem might lose her youthful beauty, but the love felt for her is eternal and unconditional. This is one of my favorite poems ever written by any hand. What a romantic you were, Mr. Burns. -
This poem is absolutley marvelous. I have to say though how fleeting roses are and how quickly music passes by, lasting forever only in memory. But it also shows how devoted the young man can be if he is determined in his love, however fleeting in reality, for a memory stands until somthing disprooves it.

A red red rose
Sentimental poem, which will not be much welcomed much these days. The poetic fervour is enticing, allright, but there is no message. The scottish language spoils the beauty, but maybe will stir hearts if played on pipe.

I love Robbie Burns. Whenever people think of him they think of me as I was born on the same day as him. So for you scots out there yup when you have Burn's night on 25th of January you are celebrating me, too. People always thought of me as a baby as a Red, Red, Rose which is really sweet. My ex boyfriends parents hated me and they were scottish. I told my ex, who was my boyfriend at the time to tell them they are celebrating me as well... heh. Anyway beautiful poem. I like you Robbie!

so very sweet
I do very much like this poem. I read the original version and I laughed at myself, because I didn't even know how to pronounce some of those words. ah yes, the sweet sweet british! then I read the english "translation" and I literally went "aw" and put my hand to my heart once I was done. what an incredibly sweet poem! I wish somebody would write a poem like this for me! -
Excellent
Beautiful piece, loved the dialect, I could almost hear that scottish burr in each line. Great poem!

I love this. I'm not completely versed in Rabby Burns (which is the name I know him by), but I do know he's well known for writing in dialect. The Scottish dialect is quite close to my own dialect, which is called Ulster Scots, so I can understand what the guy's saying here.
Yay for Robert Burns!

this is one of my favorite poems.
-
I have found and added a standard english translation of the poem in the notes above. 'gang dry' means 'run dry' or 'go dry'. I hope this helps to increase your enjoyment of the poem.

What does 'gang dry' mean?
-
-
I beleive it just means to become dry

This is one of the best love poems I have ever read. Such a simple rhyme scheme yet how very melodious and sweet. it’s a classic.
-
this is a very beautiful melody of words and thoughts__ this is not the love as we use very frequently, he is talking about the extremes of love... that sound more sweet as LUVE.he is a great composer...
