Although seemingly a simple statement of fact the image grows with each line.
The world in general, but defined more personally with the question aimed at the individual reader. First there is speech, maybe just casual conversation, but slowly words materialise , maybe overheard, coming through more audibly now, that turn quickly to rumour, and finally the pain and possibly betrayal felt.
The pen is mightier than the sword words cut deep, whether written or spoken. -
one thing that literature; prose and poetry, both reflect is human nature, and it also shows that in our ever changing world some things never change and one of them is human nature this poem is true today as it was when it was written.

Such is human society.
A grim but truthful view.
As in true Japanese style, each line builds the subject with more understanding.
