As I dozed

As I dozed
The man I love
Appeared, so
It is dreams that
Have begun to comfort me

to express longing in such a way that there is still some kind of comfort, shows the poet's true open heart.

Ah, this is beautiful. It is filled with sadness and longing for a lover. It seems that the person Ono dreamt of could never meet her for some reason that we might never know. Excellent thought behind the tanka.

So goes the heart of a dreamer. I am left to think if there is some reason why dreams need to be a comfort rather than the tangile comfort of companionship. A bad relationship, death, far away for some reason?

I found this sad in as much as the only solace that seems to be found is in dreams of a love and not in the actual person. But in the end maybe dreams are better than nothing at all and if they comfort then it's not so bad.

Beautiful, haunting almost... I'm positive in Japanese it had that sort of ring to it, the one where you build up rhythm and then the poem is excellent? I'd love to read this in Japanese...

This reminds me of something I had writen in urdu years back, for my mom actually after coming to Kuwait. Roughly translated it goes as
"now it is only in dreams that we will meet
it is but to meet you that I sleep"

It is strange how words feelings echo through different cultures and through different ages even languages.
    This poem is extremely poignant.

And in all instances it is in those dreams in which most of us live. It is not a reality but we all wish it to be, and tho that is sad, some of us find solace in them.

It's a good short piece, like all her rest.

But alas the dreams don't last long enough and leave a bitterness that lingers in the mouth and on the flesh of dreams.

Sad and longing, but effectively to the point.
This works well in its form.

    A pleasure to read.
