Sleep on, sleep on, another hour —
I would not break so calm a sleep,
To wake to sunshine and to show'r,
To smile and weep.

Sleep on, sleep on, like sculptured thing,
Majestic, beautiful art thou;
Sure seraph shields thee with his wing
And fans thy brow —

We would not deem thee child of earth,
For, O, angelic, is thy form!
But, that in heav'n thou had'st thy birth,
Where comes no storm

To mar the bright, the perfect flow'r,
But all is beautiful and still —
And golden sands proclaim the hour
Which brings no ill.

Sleep on, sleep on, some fairy dream
Perchance is woven in thy sleep —
But, O, thy spirit, calm, serene,
Must wake to weep.

    Storming love

    Poe....
    the master of love and sorrow,
    the great ink of morose beauty..

    you stir the threads of my heart, every time you attempt to write..

    My thanks, to you, and gratitude..

    Ah, nice poem! One of the only by old Edgar that aren't sad/meniacal/evil/etc. Not saying it's not what I like in paticular, but it wasn't really appropriate for the assinment I am doing. I agree with most of your posts and think it was a very good poem. Too bad I don't like to repeat work twice, I'll have to pick a different poet next time. So long ol' Poe! I am off to finish my work.

    This is so gentle and loving. One can feel the adoration as he writes. Could easily be for a lover as well as a child.

    A lovely poem, and on a topic that I so can relate to... sleep! I think he is writing about not just how wonderful it is to sleep, but how wonderful it is to watch someone you love sleep... how peaceful and serene they look, like an angel must be guarding over them.

    i think he is describing how serene it is to sleep, and although its lovely, a part of life is you have to wake up and face life's goodness and bad. its a beautiful poem.

    It feels like a lullabye. Maybe he's talking about what a gift sleep is. Like in the last line;
    'But, O, thy spirit, calm, serene,
    Must wake to weep.'

    How calm they are in sleep but when they wake up it's all gone.

    Another beautiful peace by Mr. Poe!

    Actually, they found him unconscious in a gutter...he died in a hospital shortly afterward. The events leading up to him being found in that gutter remain a mystery.

    This had that song-like feel to it that are common with Poe. I thought the wording to be beautiful and the imagery fantastic! This was written with tenderness and brought to mind the loving awe and joy of watching a child or lover as they sleep....the fullness at heart you get when you "feel" the blessing you've been given in them...the smile at "how innocent they look when they are sleeping" comments from mothers. This was such a joy to read! Elaina
