I am being accused of loving you, that is all
It is not an insult, but a praise, that is all
My heart is pleased at the words of the accusers
O my dearest dear, they say your name, that is all
For what I am ridiculed, it is not a crime
My heart's useless playtime, a failed love, that is all
I haven't lost hope, but just a fight, that is all
The night of suffering lengthens, but just a night, that is all
In the hand of time is not the rolling of my fate
In the hand of time roll just the days, that is all
A day will come for sure when I will see the truth
My beautiful beloved is behind a veil, that is all
The night is young, Faiz start saying a Ghazal
A storm of emotions is raging inside, that is all

Oops!
Oops! 2004 was the year the poem was originally posted to our older version Oldpoety site and has now been removed. thanks for bringing it to our attention. Von ~ Oldpoetry -
Am I reading the author notes right? He died in 1984, but wrote this ghazal in 2004? Marvellous, indeed!
A beautiful ghazal, the subject is love, and whether his beloved is his country or his religion or his wife, the emotion is the same. I like particularly /the night of suffering lengthens, but just a night, that is all/ I find this to be a very brave line. -
Have written one of these forms of poetry and they are very interesting to write - liked this one that was written quite awhile ago. Have never heard of this poet before, so it is good that you feature his poetry here now.

An amasing piece of poetry, that is all.

Urdu
Yes the poem is written in Urdu and the translation is perfect but there is no such thing as illicit love description in the poem. Love in itself is the most divine relation and is a spontaneous phenomenon so no one can induce love or condemn this in any way. I don’t understand what you actually want to ask. -
How grateful and joyful I feel to be able to read and think on this verse
From guest John-Peter Creighton (contact)
Does the phrase accusers refer to some in the community who would bring Sharia to bear on illicit lovers? Would that one could see how the Urdu script looks, and hopefully there can be some side by side English with the script. Is the script in the Arabic alphabet, or is it another? -

The word ghazal
From guest Paraj Patel (contact)
I understand the word ghazal and I think it means talking to one's beloved. And I really liked your poems -
I do not have a great knowledge of the 'history' of India/Pakistan to understand completely this piece, but as written I found it very moving. The acceptance,"that is all", repeated throughout is like a mantra that gives the reader greater reason to look deeper into each line, to see below the surface meaning.
Though "accused" and imprisoned, Faiz still can react and speak to the injustices he sees and feels, the "storm of emotions raging inside". He chooses to be patient and takes action to prepare >himself< for the "lengthening night". He is hopeful as noted by the line, "A day will come for sure when I will see the truth", showing that it "is just a night, that is all". I enjoyed this piece, the flow is smooth and the love of people and culture shines through the text in simple honesty. A great testament to the power of love to bring strength, courage, and real change. The translator, Hamid Rahim Sheikh, has done a marvelous job rendering this work in the English language. Thank you, sir. Rhonda -

I want His poem in urdu
-
I love this poem. I have posted it in my poetry journal so that I could share it with many others.
with peace and love -
"Dil na umeed to nahin nakaam hi to hai
Lambi hai gham ki sham magar sham hi to hai"
The heart is not hopeless, it has just lost this fight, and though the night is long it is but a night. (meaning it will end sometime)
definately my favourite lines in this particular ghazal of Faiz, lines that from the darkness of the night speak of hope of the coming light. A ghazal written in prison, one would wonder what Faiz was doing in prison, no contrary to what many might think he was not a criminal but someone who used his poetic voice for the wakening of the conscience of his country, yes he was a critic and he thought things could be better. but his words were objected to and he was imprisoned.
The poets of India and Pakistan who were the contemporaries of Faiz had a large growing social consciousness and though earlier urdu poetry was written more about subjects like love or beauty or wine, which was a reflections of the more decadent times or it was spiritual poetry written in the sufi traditions. The later day urdu poetry though was increasingly socialistic in nature. It was perhaps Ghalib who brought about a change in choice of poetic subjects (though not socialistic but more aware) but the trend for writing on other subjects was set mainly by Iqbal whose poetry was full of concern for his people and also had a deep spiritualistic nature. The love expressed here is the love Faiz has for his country.
when Faiz says
"My heart is pleased at the words of the accusers
O my dearest dear, they say your name, that is all"
The accusers he means are those who imprisoned him, who do not really have any love for their country but are patriots but in name.

The repetition is the form. Nicely done ghazal Faiz it's a difficult form to master and I've just recently learned it myself. My most recent posted poem just happens to be one and that is what led me to click yours. They fascinate me.

I think the repetition is nice. It doesn't really hurt the poem, actually I think it makes it fit together nicely. I also find it sad. It's a very nice poem, overall.

Wow oooh a prison journal love story poem thing! Chock full o stuff, thats not all thou! Good job with the flow of the poem, but after reading the full poem, it makes the reader want to kill the write...thats all!!! AHHH

From a prison journal, may make note to as why it is so repetitious (which doesn't exactly help nor hurt the piece) a person who is in prison goes insane from time to time. Tho, I, myself would find comfort in it as long as I am left alone.
I find this to be an out-look of an in-look. A pondering of something from his past and he reflects upon it in his present and future state of mind, which would be that he is trapped where he is and thus he must relinquish himself upon the pain that he must endure until he is freed (if ever) and thus he thinks on those aspects in his life.
Whether they mean anything or not to anyone else besides himself.
But, that is my interpretation and at times I am wrong.
It's a good piece that seems to be a bit repetitious to me.

very nice
"I haven't lost hope, but just a fight, that is all
The night of suffering lengthens, but just a night, that is all"
Faiz has also reached to the depth of the many colors of love with all its possible outcomes, how philosophy he examine different situations n then convince himself about the obvious situations. It’s very nice.
