Tell me Brother

TELL me, Brother, how can I renounce Maya?
When I gave up the tying of ribbons, still I tied my garment about me:
When I gave up tying my garment, still I covered my body in its folds.
So, when I give up passion, I see that anger remains;
And when I renounce anger, greed is with me still;
And when greed is vanquished, pride and vainglory remain;
When the mind is detached and casts Maya away, still it clings to the letter.
Kabīr says, "Listen to me, dear Sadhu! the true path is rarely found."

    how can we escape ourselves?
    how can we escape our bodies?
    when we escape temptation our hopes remain
    when we reliniquish our hopes our fears continue
    when fear is gone our thoughts are still deceiving
    to allow the spirit to shine requires us to extinguish all of these
    how difficult and rare this must be

    This isn't about God in the way we understand that term in the West. It's about the search for perfect being, the detachment from worldly distractions, and a seeking of the pure spirituality of being that is within each one of us.

    Maya in normal usuage brings to mind wealth and wordly things. Moh Maya love of the worldly material things. Here though Maya encompasses much more, everything that is the desire or the weakness of the physical being. But the path to God is in renunciation not just of worldy things but the hardest to give up weaknesses like ego and arrogance and anger etc. a man who is vainglorious cannot find God. The path is not easy. One may think if I strip myself of this or that I will find him but the more he strips himself of he finds more remains. he has to go with a clean and clear heart.
    Personally I see it as 'How can one ask God to make His home in a place that is already occupied. If the heart is already occupied with self love where will there be room for the Almighty. but that is the lesson I gain from reading the poem.
