Bear In There

There's a polar bear
In our Frigidaire—
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there—
That polary bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

I love how you can take ordinary objects and find there perfect place in poem, making them rhyme and letting them flow. I (personally) cant stand poems that dont rhyme and I love that your poems do!!!

The bear ion all of us

    From guest cindy cheong (contact)
I think he rote for not only him self but for the like of the other people. I think that he knew that the most important part ofwiting that if you right you shood not only do it for your self but for reader because it could inspier the futer generations and hence forth the world lives om throught the children and we will chose to expect the stroys to make us wiser and more aware of how we couldchane thefuure and the past can not be chanceso we look fored and shon the past so in are eyes there is so much and so little to know and to compehend and the story is one of my favorits and i how my words come as widom not pain.

    Wonderful

to read the words of Silverstein is just wonderful and to recall the earlier times his poetry circulated around in our midst, and his poetry is far more meaningful, and spans the child within with great enthusiasum, it's just great to come across his poetry on here besides his anthology bindings, so many favorites of his I still adore and cherish, thank you for having his work on here.

    Love this one

    From guest MarieFH (contact)
Somehow, I thought of this poem tonight and was typing it in email for my sister because I thought she might like to read his poems to her sons and I got stumped on one line, then found your website. Thanks for sharing his poems and for including it in your list of classical poetry because I think it is truly great. Another much older, but somehow similar warped sense of humor, is The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert Service--so if you like Bear in There, you might want to check out The Cremation of Sam McGee.

I loved Shell as a child, and am thrilled that now my 8-year-old daughter reads and loves his works. I hadn't realized that Shell Silverstein had passed away and was saddened to learn that. However, his legacy will live on for generations.

      It's all in his biography.
All you have to do (for any of our poets) is to click on the name beneath their picture on the right of the poem page.
Whenever possible we wil' have added a biography and a list of all the available poems by that writer.
(He was American by the way.)

I once had a roach in my fridgitydaire, but, I had to wisk it to my garbage can. I hope it lived, I'm not much in killing - anything.

It has this nice little rhythm to it.
