The Guitarist Tunes Up

With what attentive courtesy he bent
Over his instrument;
Not as a lordly conquerer who could
Command both wire and wood,
But as a man with a loved woman might,
Inquiring with delight
What slight essential things she had to say
Before they started, he and she, to play.

    I love this poem

    I fund it when I was in college in a poetry textbook. As a classical guitarist I totally got it. Playing the guitar is a sensual experience, the feel of the strings under your fingers, your arms around it, the feel of it vibrating next to you, the beauty of its finish. The metaphor is wonderful.

    i really love the poem! it's very fascinating.. at first when you read it, it sounds so musical and captivating that no one could resist the lord's love and caress for his instrument the guitar..but at the end, it's so metaphoric that the guitar is indirectly compared with a woman.. a woman who is taken cared of by the lord..... the lord here simply implies the man who affectionately loves the woman...both of them must play the romantic love affair... hehehe..... nice nuh!!!!

    A beautiful poem. In the end, we're not sure which is the reality and which is the metaphor. Is it the man and his guitar that are united in love as one, or is it the man and woman? In either case, the poet assures us that the music will be exquisite. CAM

    'with what,' I don't like the beginning but the rest is pretty good. The progression was good as well as the imagery. A song played with passion, beautifully said!
