The Waiting Life

Since it befell, with work and strife
I had not time to live my life
I turned away from it until
Work should be done and strife be still.

My hands and head for use are free,
Nor does my own life worry me,
But docile as a spaniel waits
Until this present stress abates.

Tranquil it breathes, and waits, I know,
With all its joy contained. But oh
I hope when I have time to play
My life will not have run away!

    my country

    From guest Margaret Sebbens (contact)
I am 68 years old now & when I was in 5th grade at Tathra Public School on the Far South Coast of N.S.W. I was taught the poem "My Country" & I have never forgotten it; I do so love this poem.

Sounds like my life, unfortunately so much of my life has run away, and so much gift wasted.

As a side note one of the sport house names at my childrens school is MacKellar in recognition of Dorothea MacKellar....it is good to see poets honoured in this manner.

This very well respected poetess has shined her brilliance and love of poetry to many generations of Australian school children.Even though her words were penned years ago she has captured the essence of life bringing it together in the last two lines. Life is for living and we should go live it.

Dorothea McKellar, one of my favoured poets fron school days. It would seem that work in her day was the same as it is now. Very demanding of both time and effort. A wonderful writer who has stood the test of time. I love the final two lines. My own life did not run away.

    Ryming

    From guest Genevieve Thorpe (contact)
I like how it ryhmes and sounds really sorrow, like she won't hear of misusing a second of her life.I also love how emotional it sounds.

IN such a work driven society this hits home. Why aren't these poets shown to us in schools?
