Every Conception That A Man Can Find

Every conception that a man can find
is in the stone itself, already there
concealed in excess, but will still require
a hand to free it that obeys the mind.
And you, like marble, lady without peer,
hold possibilities of every kind;
you hold the good I want and pain I fear,
though I effect the opposite of my design.
I won't claim Love's to blame for this, or Chance,
or fault your beauty or demanding will,
or blame unequal birth and circumstance;
I'll say that mercy and annihilation both
were waiting in your heart, and there my skill
cannot discover anything but death.

    This is the first piece of old poetry I have read. I had the dictionary ready to go in anticipation of numerous words I would not understand because of vocabulary more advanced than my own. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the language being within my vocabulary as well as quite eloquent. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece and believe I will be spending much more time reading Old Poetry in the future. There are so many ideas for original poems here, I'll have to come back, if simply for inspiration. I'm extremely thankful that I decided to see what Old Poetry was all about.

    Wow..I honestly didn't think that in Old Poetry things would be so much like All Poetry. Your imagery was amazing, and this piece makes me want to hop onto a plane. This was an amazing piece of work, and I truly enjoyed it!! Great work!!

    didn't think I could find much similarity in old poetry as there is in contemporary, but it is actually very down to earth...
    I can also tell his writing style is similar to mine, because he goes from one thing to another, I don't know, but the fundamentals look similar...maybe not..I don't know, but whatev, the poem's great!

    poems like this make me want to become a sculptor.

    If you think about it, poets are like sculpors in some sense, in that the words are all around us, and we pull from them, sculpt the ones we want where, placement, ideas, images, ect.

    Michelangelo's sense of opposites laying in wait in things love/chance, mercy/annihilation.

    The eloquence of his writing style has kept me mystified with the fact that he was more well known for his other arts besides poetry, when he is such a good poet! Once of my favorites ever since I discovered him three years ago in a barnes & noble
