Under the moonlight

Under the moonlight, cuckoo cried as if it coughed up blood.
The sad voice kept me waking up,
the cry reminded me of my old home town far away.

Notes

A Chinese poem
Writen by Shiki about the age of ten.

This is a very interesting poem, interesting that a ten year old wrote such a beautiful piece The imagery here is very dark and I like the simile in the first line, very dark and vivid This was a really good haiku

Very... interesting. It is fun to read, though.

So stange that at the age of ten Shiki wrote this, unknown how this poem would reflect his own life. The Japanese cuckoo (shiki) is believed to sing so hard it will sing until it coughs up blood. Later at the age of twenty two, he himself started coughing up blood, an early sign of tuberculosis, he adopted the pen name of shiki after the cuckoo, later the illness brought about his own end.
