The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me,
And I cannot, cannot go.
The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow;
The storm is fast descending,
And yet I cannot go.
Clouds beyond clouds above me,
Wastes beyond wastes below;
But nothing drear can move me:
I will not, cannot go.

I have not finished reading Wuthering Heights yet... just three more chapters to go, but to ME, this sort of relates to the book in a way. It has the same sadness, gloominess, Wuthering weather.. everything.
I really enjoyed reading it. She has got an amazing talent! -

Amazing poem. Really get the feeling of her love for yorkshire. The way that the eerie and mysterious atmosphere, which would normally compel people to run home, is the reason for which she stays. Great juxtoposition. Her love wont let her leave, even if she thinks she wants to. Wonderful poem by a wonderful woman. -
Sad and gloomy yet dark and mysterious. I think she wants to go but something in her won't let her go...maybe guilt?

Another of the classic poets that never die. A very dark poem with intense feeling. Escellent use of imagery to convey these feelings. Emily Bronte, along with all of the other classic poets, should be posted on here more often to allow the AP members a look into poetic history.

look for the book called "The Bronte Story" by Tim Vicary

though this poem appears simple enogh, it has a lotta hidden meaning in it; especially abt emily bronte's personal life. the imagery is dark, depressing and gloomy, giving us an idea tht she was passing thru a very difficult part of her short life (perhaps she has written this poem just abt at the end of her life)....the forceful language also shows her determination of not surrendering easily to the circumstances.... -
I like the atmosphere in the poem, and it's pretty good until the last four lines. "Clouds beyound clouds above me" and "wastes beyond wasted below" are feeble and give the impression that she is only trying to stretch

I like this. I think it symbolizes being called into the storm but not going because she has unfinished business that needs attending before she goes.

Although written before Wuthering heights, I wonder if this could have been a forerunner, perhapse a thought, and the poem is Kathy's ghost talking upon the cold, windy moor.

Confusing
I think that shes in a cemetary or in a mortuary place like it, thats why it sounds so dreary. -
-
she has a way of expressing what i can not
-

its being trapped. trapped in a space that she doesnt see a way out of. at one time in our lives we have all been there. she just found words and put it on paper.
