Trees

I think that I shall never see
    A poem as lovely as a tree.
    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
    A tree that may in Summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;
    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.
    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    I have to wonder if there's a child around who has not read this poem at least once during their scholastic career. I have always enjoyed this piece.

    Very famous poem... but I didn't know that when I picked it out of a book of old poetry and set it to song... you could say I saw it in it's true form... unfiltered by fame and scholastics...

    Though I don't care for rhyming poetry, the thing that makes this different from amature poetry that rhymes is the fact that it has a set meter, and its use of symbolism.

    A thing of beauty

    I remember reading this poem from a childrens book when I worked at a day care center. It is such a lovely poem. I had memorized it word for word because to me it was one of the most beautiful poems I had ever read.

    My love for poetry started early on. I remember a character reading a portion of this in Superman II and wondering if it was an actual poem and longing to read it in its entirety. I love the truth and imagery in this write! Elaina

    I can only imagine the thoughts of a young man in the trenches of World War 1 - seeing the total beauty of a tree, one moment of beauty in a time when there was so much ugliness.
    this is a beautiful poem.

    Actually I think water and dirt and a thing called a seed can make a tree, but, I know what you mean here.

    a lovely piece here.

    don't touch it!

    A very brief but concise observation by the narrator of a simplistic example of everday nature that reveals the complexity of God's creative ability.
