All fled—all done, so lift me on the pyre;
The feast is over, and the lamps expire.

Seems there's been much debate on whether these lines were first written by Mr. Howard.

REH was a pulp writer, not a comic strip writer, and this poignant piece was his suicide note, found in his typewriter the day that he blew his mind out in his car. Like all his writing, it reflects his dark, tortured, and somewhat-autistic genius.

He was Not a comic strip author. He penned some of the greatest adveture novels of all time. In my opinion the movies inspired by his work do an injustice to this author of fantasy and adventure of the highest calibre.

I didn't think he was a comic strip author... he wrote fantasy that was later made the basis for a comic strip, I think.

A lovely epitaph, written in his typically acient style. The feeling of a viking funeral, perhaps Beowulf. Despite the fact that he was a comic strip author he is on my list of favorite poets. Strange, I thought I'd commented on this one before.

This gives me the image of someone finding themself all alone in the world and wanting to join those who have already gone on to that eternal resting place. Very dark poem!

Short but with a message and the smooth harmony of iambic pentameter. It is a bit abstract becuase this could be the end of a life or perhaps the end of a season. Nonetheless.. it is lovely!

Short n sweet. Like another piece I read in a book somewhere: "The play is over, you can die now."
