The Snare

I hear a sudden cry of pain!
There is a rabbit in a snare:
Now I hear the cry again,
But I cannot tell from where.

But I cannot tell from where
He is calling out for aid!
Crying on the frightened air,
Making everything afraid!

Making everything afraid!
Wrinkling up his little face!
And he cries again for aid;
- and I cannot find the place!

And I cannot find the place
Where his paw is in the snare!
Little One! Oh, Little One!
I am searching everywhere!

    deepest sorrow

    i think the poet has described the pain that he has seen of another.it shows that this person was trapped in somewhere and was suffering a lot.he was calling for aid but no response could be given by the poet.it was faint first but the pain seems to grow more each day.and even though he wants to help it cannot be given.

    I entered a speech competiton in school in approx 1962 and this was my poem, I had forgotten the final verse and was thrilled to be able to search the web for the poem, I had thought it was Robert Louis Stevenson.

    As a young child I have witnessed the catching of a rabbit in a snare and, apart from the hidden meaning he describes the scene and experience so clearly

    I think that the poete discribes his suffering when he was a little child because his father left him and his mother got married to a nother person. So he uses a little rabbite in a snare to show his feeling and the rubbite always sympolises the victem.

    The poet describes a sudden cry of pain.It is a rabbit caught in a trap.H e tries to find him, but cannot find the place.The painful cry haunts him,yet he fails to discover the unfortunate thing.The cry,though faint in the begining,overpowers everything,and even the air itself seems to be full of fright and pain.Mark the gradual intensity of pain,and note the action of the poet.The incident arouses a nameless sympathy for the poor and for those who are weak and unhappy.
    With this poem we enter the outside world which lies on the borders of childhood.The rabbit,and the trap appear as an unfamiliar thing and we ask as to why there are traps for such loving creatures as the rabbits.
    Well in short this is an amazing poem .theme is appealing.
    Making everything afraid!
    Wrinkling up his little face!
    And he cries again for aid;
    - and I cannot find the place!
