I hear a sudden cry of pain!
There is a rabbit in a snare:
Now I hear the cry again,
But I cannot tell from where.
But I cannot tell from where
He is calling out for aid!
Crying on the frightened air,
Making everything afraid!
Making everything afraid!
Wrinkling up his little face!
And he cries again for aid;
- and I cannot find the place!
And I cannot find the place
Where his paw is in the snare!
Little One! Oh, Little One!
I am searching everywhere!

Appreciation of the poem
From guest sumana Hettiarachchi (contact)
A poem heard and learnt in nineteen thirties and still ringing in my ear with full of compassion and sympathy. Animal at the hands of cruelty struggling to die. Let these poems be brought to the ears of the now a days children who love to read poetry and allow kindness be cherished in their minds as oldern days. -

I learened this poem 68yrs ago and was reminded of it when out walking and heard an animal shriek I am often reminded of the poems we learned by heart and were so relevant to me as a child growing up during the2nd world war We spent hours roaming the country side and did not need reminding of environmental issues We had and still have a tremendous care for the wonderful country side we grew up in -

From guest Faiha (contact)
i think the poet has described the pain that he has seen of another.it shows that this person was trapped in somewhere and was suffering a lot.he was calling for aid but no response could be given by the poet.it was faint first but the pain seems to grow more each day.and even though he wants to help it cannot be given. -

As a young child I have witnessed the catching of a rabbit in a snare and, apart from the hidden meaning he describes the scene and experience so clearly -
I think the theme of this poem is about freedom .
-
I think that the poete discribes his suffering when he was a little child because his father left him and his mother got married to a nother person. So he uses a little rabbite in a snare to show his feeling and the rubbite always sympolises the victem.

The poet describes a sudden cry of pain.It is a rabbit caught in a trap.H e tries to find him, but cannot find the place.The painful cry haunts him,yet he fails to discover the unfortunate thing.The cry,though faint in the begining,overpowers everything,and even the air itself seems to be full of fright and pain.Mark the gradual intensity of pain,and note the action of the poet.The incident arouses a nameless sympathy for the poor and for those who are weak and unhappy.
With this poem we enter the outside world which lies on the borders of childhood.The rabbit,and the trap appear as an unfamiliar thing and we ask as to why there are traps for such loving creatures as the rabbits.
Well in short this is an amazing poem .theme is appealing.
Making everything afraid!
Wrinkling up his little face!
And he cries again for aid;
- and I cannot find the place!
