The Rose That Grew From Concrete

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

I love it! It shows pride and power of the rose. It's really powerful. Your poem reminds me of Martin Luther King, how he had to be so powerful against the others while they tried to stop him. Your poem is life, love, liberty and greatness in just a few words. Way to go!

    From guest Elsa (contact)
This poem is very true. It refers to Tupac himself, and, to me, every other person who has ever grown to be something great, and positive, out of something shitty. Growing a rose from concrete is just as impossible as Martin Luther King Jr. becoming what he became, out of a world where black people had no chance for anything. Tupac was a great man. Rest in Peace.

    He Lives On

From guest Anton (Nottingham, England) (contact)
Tupac was a man whose life was constantly hit by struggle and contraversy, but the lyrics to his songs and the words in his poetry are inspiration for those who share the struggles and go through the contraversial things in life. Tupac will forever live on through those who love and admire his work, he was more than a poet, than a rapper or an actor, his short life was a blessing not only to those that knew or met him but to all those who have taken inspiration from his workings. God bless you, in our hearts you live and will live on forever.

    From guest Hom_lot_77 (contact)
What must a man do to be great, what must a man sacrifice in order to be content. Tears have fallen from the eyes of many, prayers have been made, blood has been spilled. There are things we cant understand so we must hold on to the things that remain. The ends justify the means. You are born in a moment and die as a memory.

    They

Will look at the roots someday, and wonder why they haven't got none of them, their un-caring and self-abased gardens have showered them with everything except the most important..

    Strength
    wisdom,
    and independence..

So I guess it seems fair to look at all those who wouldn't stop to even think about you or what you've been through, and then think to yourself "I'll be stronger, to force them all to see me, and force their seeing where I shall stand -- someday"..

Long lives the rose without garden feet,
long lives the rose that grew from concrete..

    Thank you 2pac.

the seeds of freedom: A story of a man

    From guest Patrick Dabbelt (contact)
My grandfather was a poor first generation Irish-american who, upon not knowing his father, was raised by his aunt in the countryside of Ohio; a place called Washington Courthouse. Through having nothing, he worked for his freedom. He was merely a high school student during World War Two, so he didn't serve his country overseas. However, during these years he single handedly kept his entire community fed by running the chop house. Through being a hard worker and a rugged individual, he accelled in both football and basketball in his youth. He went to Xavier Univ. on a basketball scholarship, and walked on to the football team (this is when they had a football program). He ended up losing his scholarship when he and his coach came in verbal conflict. The football coach offered him a scholarship to come play for him, but being stubborn, as he is, my Grandfather dropped out and left Xavier, to go back out into the only world he knew; the world of hard work. He joined the Marines to be a scout but didn't see any combat due to a football injury. He went on to marry his sweetheart, have five kids, and worked until he was wealthy enough to buy a big peice of land that he could call his own. He still lives in that peice of heaven that he worked so hard for, and 4 out of 5 of his kids went out into the world only so they could make it back to that peice of heaven that was good enough for their father. But heaven can't last forever, and its up to the next generation to keep it going. By working so hard, my grandfather somewhat spoiled his children and grandchildren to where we don't know work like he does. But every grandfather wants grandchildren of their own, and we all have our own idea of what hard work is. To me, I am going to be a scholar and a history professor, which is something my grandfather couldn't even comprehend doing and respects me for. My grandfather's story is much like this poem, in that "the seeds of freedom are to be found in the soils of oppression."

I used this poem to introduce a lesson on the play A Raisin in the Sun.
It fits great with the theme of the play.
Also, it goes along with the poem by Langston Hughes. A dream deferred.....

my life rite now feels like a rollaroacter ride, emotions running high, not knowing who to trust, everyone gives u fake smiles, tellin u a bunch of lies, jealousy invades there heart which leads to the evil eye,I feel drifted from all those that i know, i dunno y and what 4, i cant explain the pain that has been inflicted, how feelings can be emotionally be twisted, because i rhyme from my heart people say im gifted, but im in search for something more so my soul gets lifted, and my heartache moves away and gets shifted, the lonliness will soon eradicate and be drifted, y cnt people be str8 and tell the truth, instead ofweakening their soul with satans spit of envy and hate, but now people are too immuned to greed, when will people realise that the devil has invaded there mind body and soul, and soon will inavade the population as a whole. I Cry by Tupac Sometimes when I'm alone I Cry, Cause I am on my own. The tears I cry are bitter and warm. They flow with life but take no form I Cry because my heart is torn. I find it difficult to carry on. If I had an ear to confiding, I would cry among my treasured friend, but who do you know that stops that long, to help another carry on. The world moves fast and it would rather pass by. Then to stop and see what makes one cry, so painful and sad. And sometimes... I Cry and no one cares about why.

A Meaning Which Grew From Respect

    From guest Marxiavelli (contact)
It would be wrong of me to say that this poem is one of the greatest ever written, rergardless of the deep respect I hold for the Poet and the meaning expressed through his words. It is fair to say, however, that the feeling of hope instilled throughout the poem is an insight into how many would believe Tupac Shakur to have thought about his own life and how others should be inspired to do the same. A special, if not too intricate, piece of writing with a great meaning. Written by one of few modern day literary geniuses. Tupac, you are missed even by those who never knew you and that is truly a mark of your achievement.

    Much Better

Now this is a much better example of Tupac's work, so much more than "I Cry".

It leaves the reader wondering many things ... Is he talking about himself ... Coloured people in general .. or anybody who has been beaten down.

It doesn't have to apply to the Ghetto either, it could just as well apply to some rich boy/girl who just doesn't ever seem to come up to his peers ideas of what he/she should achieve ... ah but then they do something which far exceeds what was wanted.

Just because Tupac came from a lowly background, doesn't mean that everything he thought revolved around that.

So many layers in so few words ... This is a worthy tribute to the man.

This is one of the best poems I've ever read Tupac was an amazing artist. I believe it represents his life it lets you know that he rose above the worlds expectations of him. He proved simple logic to be wrong. In the midst of a worn cracked sidewalk stepped on a few too many times beauty emerged. Poverty turned him into a deep and talented artist, Instead of wearing down his sense of self worth. I love Tupac he's the greatest!!!!

The poem is Genius. If if was fully developed and layed out the whole entire scene, It would not challange our minds or allow us to interpret it into our own existance. Tupac is the rose that came from the bottom and made it to the top. He didn't always handle everything in the best manner, but he did it his way and he always came up smiling.

Yes the metaphor is indeed brillant, poverty is of course the concrete(or the "ghetto" if you want to call it that), and the rose is the beauty that grows despite the harsh circumstances surrounding it. In a way this poem captures Tupac's essence, because it's easy to think of Tupac as the rose that grew from concrete. But the poem is very underdeveloped, and falls short of how great it could have been.

Or it could be any person from the Ghetto...you know? Any one of those kids who tries. I am in awe of Tupac, I just discovered his beauty about 5 minutes ago...

      Thanks for pointing that out

Everyone keeps saying this poem is about tupac himself. When, just like in other poetry, the speaker isn't always or even mostly the poet himself.

It is not in our hands to 'know' what a poet says through his poems...only he alone can know. One can only interpret---finding his/her own truth within the piece. I, for one, see something similar to James S. Tupac did not live the peachy life attributed to famous performers (One needs to just look in his eyes to see the pain and suffering). Yet, he smiled so much---thru out every trial, he knew he could make it. So, like the rose, he triumphed over the oppressing surroundings by staying true to his dream and persevering.

What 'Pac is trying to say in this piece is that he is the rose that grew from concrete. He came from the poverty ridden ghetto which symbolizes the concrete and came out beautiful, magestic, and strong.

Anyone, no matter where your from can do anything they want to as the rose that grew form concrete implies.

    Great piece of work!!

This is an interesting concept although it is one of Tupac's worst pieces (in my opinion.) As you said Nam, it fails to develop itself enough to allow the reader know what he was talking about. I suppose you can view it in your own way, in the first person, in which case it could help someone. I feel as if this could be the reson for the creation of this piece by Lord Pac.

I've seen sunflowers and the like grow from concrete but I've never seen a rose, unless someone dropped it there. I know, I doubt he's actually speaking about roses actually growing in concrete, or he could be -- I guess only he knows or knew.

I take it as a metaphorical piece, with good enjambments. A good piece that 2pac has written here.
