A boat beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July —
Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear —
Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die:
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.
Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.
In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream —
Lingering in the golden gleam —
Life, what is it but a dream?

Is it any wonder that Lewis Carroll is one of my favorite poets? Absolutely beautiful! I love the rhyme scheme, I don't think I've heard one like it before... so unique! I love the part that says:
"Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die:
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes."
It just has such a beautiful aura about it, that draws you in, calms you, and at the same time, sends a little chill up your spine, of something so wonderful yet undefinable. -
This poem is brillant, nearly brought me to tears first time I read it. I am a fan of Alice in Wonderland and this poem I feel really captures the legacy of Lewis Carroll in the literary world. I see myself looking through Carolls eyes, perhaps at my little sister in ten years, reminicing over lost innocence. And I see a younger self through Carroll's eyes as well, listening to those same stories and dreaming all the while.

So who knew that by taking the first letter of each line from this poem would spell out the full name of the 'original' Alice, upon whom the stories were originally written? (Alice Pleasance Liddell.)
