We never know how high we are
Till we are asked to rise
And then if we are true to plan
Our statures touch the skies—
The Heroism we recite
Would be a normal thing
Did not ourselves the Cubits warp
For fear to be a King—

Still Speaks To Us
From guest Lana Kent (contact)
Even though this was written a long, long time ago and it is difficult to read it still "speaks" to our generation. She is telling us to go for our goals and to never give up. -
First stanza- talks about heroism. we would never understand how high we are, till we are faced with challenges to arise to the situation. An if we are true to plans, we may be famous sky high.
Second stanza- seems like this stanza talks about her own plight. The heroism she talks about in the first stanza, will be a normal one. Did not they warp the elbows (cubits) of people for fear they would become the king and rule. She could also be in a similar situation, but her exact plight is still a mystery.

peaceful wisdom
I have great respect for the simple wisdom in emily dickinson,s poetry. I also admire the work of Conrad Aiken who was largely responsible for bringing Dickinson's work to a wider audience. The website should have his poem Annihilation which is my favourite and has to be read without breathing. -
Does Emily mean that most people hide their light under a bushell for fear of looking as if they are boasting?

I like this, it is a simple piece but carries a good message.

Just a wonderful poem .Emily was a true poet of stature.
Thank you for bringing her work to my attention. Well worthy of many reads.......Thank you -
Such a recluse Emily was...over 500 poems written in her lifetime and only a few were published.
