Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand:
Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand!

The First Fig and Second Fig were the opening poems in her volume entitled A Few Figs From Tistles, published in 1922. I fell in love with St. Edna when I was 14 - many, many years ago. The Figs have been my watchwords since first reading them.

To the best of my knowledge this poem is actually a set. My first reading of it as a child was in an old poetry book that listed both the first and second fig paired together under the title Figs from Thistles.

No doubt inspired by the tale of the man who built his house on the sand, though I forget it. An inspirational piece!
