My country! In thy days of glory past
A beauteous halo circled round thy brow
and worshipped as a deity thou wast—
Where is thy glory, where the reverence now?
Thy eagle pinion is chained down at last,
And grovelling in the lowly dust art thou,
Thy minstrel hath no wreath to weave for thee
Save the sad story of thy misery!
Well—let me dive into the depths of time
And bring from out the ages, that have rolled
A few small fragments of these wrecks sublime
Which human eye may never more behold
And let the guerdon of my labour be,
My fallen country! One kind wish for thee!

this poem tells us the past glory of India and the poet wants to bring back the glory again,he compares India with an eagle soaring high in the sky but is now chained. He compares india to a goddess.Henry wants to go deep into past and bring back the lost glory of the country. -

To my mind this is a sad lamentation of past glories and a wake up call for the nation (India).
"In thy days of glory past" ... "Thy eagle pinion is chained down"
India, a once proud nation with a glorious history stretching back many hundred years, was conquered and fettered first by the British and then by technological changes.
"And grovelling in the lowly dust "
From being a nation proud of itself and its culture it has become a country that seems to beg for the scraps of more inustrialised lands.
"Thy minstrel hath no wreath to weave "
Its literary and musical heroes that once sang its praises are silent or worse still are adopting western styles and bemoaning their current status.
"Well—let me dive into the depths of time" ....
The poet seems to end by saying that he will show the country and its population) what they have been and what they no longer consider important and hope that they will think well of him (the writer) and thus think well of themself.
