Hush a By Baby

Hush-a-by Baby
  On the tree top,
  When the wind blows
  The cradle will rock;
  When the bough breaks
  The cradle will fall,
  Down tumbles baby,
  Cradle, and all.

Notes

1. "The best-known lullaby both in England and America,
it is regularly crooned in hundreds of thousands of homes at nightfall."
See The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, ed. Iona and Peter Opie (1951\; Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1966), no. 22, p. 61.

    Most lullabye's were effective for the restful tone of voice rather than their subject matter.
    When you think about it this is a typically horrendous tale as many lullabye's were.
    I wonder how many babies were scared out of their wits by nightmares of falling branches once they were old enough to understand the meaning of the words.
