I met a Man as I went walking:
We got talking,
Man and I.
"Where are you going to, Man?" I said
(I said to the Man as he went by).
"Down to the village, to get some bread.
Will you come with me?" "No, not I."
I met a horse as I went walking;
We got talking,
Horse and I.
"Where are you going to, Horse, today?"
(I said to the Horse as he went by).
"Down to the village to get some hay.
Will you come with me?" "No, not I."
I met a Woman as I went walking;
We got talking,
Woman and I.
"Where are you going to, Woman, so early?"
(I said to the Woman as she went by).
"Down to the village to get some barley.
Will you come with me?" "No, not I."
I met some Rabbits as I went walking;
We got talking,
Rabbits and I.
"Where are you going in your brown fur coats?"
(I said to the Rabbits as they went by).
"Down to the village to get some oats.
Will you come with us?" "No, not I."
I met a Puppy as I went walking;
We got talking,
Puppy and I.
"Where are you going this nice fine day?"
(I said to the Puppy as he went by).
"Up to the hills to roll and play."
"I'll come with you, Puppy," said I.
We got talking,
Man and I.
"Where are you going to, Man?" I said
(I said to the Man as he went by).
"Down to the village, to get some bread.
Will you come with me?" "No, not I."

My Mum gave me an old poetry book of hers when I was little! There are thousands in it and this was my favourite of them all!!!!!! Oddly enough my Mum told me when I was younger after I decided I loved the poem that it was her favourite poem in the whole book when she was little and still to this day we both know it word for word. I am so glad other people enjoyed it as much as my Mother and I do. -
Memories
From guest Anne Vaughan (contact)
I remember reading this poem apporixcmately 65 years ago in elocution class (do they havfe those any more?). I was evacuated to Kent from London with my convent school. The nuns came with us and we had our school apart from the villagers. I was reciting this poem to my greandchildren recently, and immediately I found myself in elocution mode. I pronounced all the words, clearly, distinctly and correctly. -

I love this poem and it's most definitely part of my childhood, but it's always annoyed me that the puppy doesn't ask him to join him in the hills, he just invited himself. Bad manners really. -

I've loved this poem since I was in first grade. I had forgotten what it was called or what A.A. Milne book it was from. So I went looking and this was the first place I found it, so thank you. -

disgraceful
I am a HUGE A.A Milne fan! This poem is NOT in the right form. There is about 6 verses in the original poem. I would be happy to post it. I'm sure Mr Milne wouldnt be impressed about this. -

Hyperie
If you have a better version then we would be more than happy to see it here. You could send it to me by IM or in fact post it right here. then, once checked out, it will be added to the authors collection in it's correct format.
