Vespers

Little Boy kneels at the foot of the bed,
Droops on the little hands little gold head.
Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares!
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers.

God bless Mummy. I know that's right.
Wasn't it fun in the bath to-night?
The cold's so cold, and the hot's so hot.
Oh! God bless Daddy - I quite forgot.

If I open my fingers a little bit more,
I can see Nanny's dressing-gown on the door.
It's a beautiful blue, but it hasn't a hood.
Oh! God bless Nanny and make her good.

Mine has a hood, and I lie in bed,
And pull the hood right over my head,
And I shut my eyes, and I curl up small,
And nobody knows that I'm there at all.

Oh! Thank you, God, for a lovely day.
And what was the other I had to say?
I said "Bless Daddy," so what can it be?
Oh! Now I remember it. God bless Me.

Little Boy kneels at the foot of the bed,
Droops on the little hands little gold head.
Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares!
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers.

This poem was in my parent's "Childcraft" books that came with the set of WorldBook Encylopedias. I'm 52 years old and still recite this poem when I'm having difficulty falling asleep!

I was one of the many children that memorized Vespers as a child. It remains to this day very dear to my heart. I am lucky enough to be able to put a granddaughter to sleep at night and this poem is used as part of her night time routine.

I am so pleased to have found the words to this poem. I used to read it to my children and my eldest memorized it when she was 4. As we are now waiting for the arrival of our first great grandchild I am anxious to start buying books and a book of poems by A A Milne will be first on my list.

    The real Christopher Robin

    From guest Steve (contact)
The character Christopher Robin was based on Milne's son, Christoper Robin Milne. According to Wikipedia, this very poem - for Chris, who somewhat resented his father's characterization of him - was quoted as being, "the one work that has brought me over the years more toe-curling, fist-clenching, lip-biting embarrassment than any other". Simply amazing.

My mother used to sing this to me when I was little. Now that I'm expecting my first little girl, I'm practicing so I can sing it for her. I'm glad I found all the words.

I had to learn this poem when I was a child. It always stuck with me. Now, I'm the father of a little boy with beautiful golden hair. He is every bit a Christopher Robin. His life brought new meaning to this poem.

For my 14th birthday my mother bought me the entire winnie the pooh works by A. A. Milne as I have always been a huge fan. I had never heard this poem before, but it quickly surpassed the stories as my favorite of all winnie the pooh and Christopher Robin writings. The is my favorite poem and I love to think about the innocents and heart that goes into childrens' prayers - which is perfectly captured by this poem. It reminds me of some of the childhood I missed in all the chaos of my childhood life. I once did a research project on Milne and read someone's "scholarly" thoughts on the poem. This person totally missed the point, all they could talk about was how children were ungrateful and how the poem proved it. I wish everyone could see the love and innocents that goes into this poem. As part of my research I looked into the real Christopher Robin, and it is easy to see that this was probably something that was captured in part from true events - the bed time prays of a little boy.

I remembered part of this poem from my childhood and have been seriously looking for it. thank you so much. I am trying to leave my grandchildren a collection of my favorite childhood poems. The old work is truly gone, and with it the best of poetry.

How beautifully Milne has captured the childlike faith and innocent fun of the young.
Though older than me this poem still retains its youthful freshness.

    Vespers

    From guest Bob (contact)
My father, age 86, used to read this to my sister and brothers and me in the 1950's, as we were going to sleep. It was peaceful and wonderful to hear, yet a bit confusing: Mom's name is Nancy, and Dad frequently called her Nanny, so at such a young age, I was certain Vespers had been written for her.

This is my sister's favorite poem by Milne. She always read it to me when I couldn't sleep at night. We're both married now, but she gave me the collection of stories & poems for my family to treasure.

    Sooo Cute

I love little children prayer poems. And this one is so sweet. To be honored to see a child praying. Its beautiful and only can be describe in a poem. The God of all heavens bows down to hear a child at prayer.
