I have just seen a beautiful thing
Slim and still,
Against a gold, gold sky,
A straight cypress,
Sensitive
Exquisite,
A black finger
Pointing upwards.
Why, beautiful, still finger are you black?
And why are you pointing upwards?
Notes
Some of Angelina's poetry is what we might call "short and sweet".

To Guest Angie,
To me it seems pretty clear
the writer has just seen a beautiful thing. It is a Cypress tree!!
Against the golden sky it appears black (silhouette?) and looks straight and exquisite.
Perhaps she also means to say that why does a black thing still stand erect, why doea it not bow down? Or perhaps not. Is the cypress a symbol of the "black" peoples as a whole? I do not know for sure.
A part of the beauty of poetry is interpreting what the poet has not written. That is also the danger of poerty as, in placing the meaning onto the words, you expose your own thoughts as well.
