Good night! which put the candle out?
A jealous zephyr, not a doubt.
Ah! friend, you little knew
How long at that celestial wick
The angels labored diligent;
Extinguished, now, for you!
It might have been the lighthouse spark
Some sailor, rowing in the dark,
Had importuned to see!
It might have been the waning lamp
That lit the drummer from the camp
To purer reveille!

First stanza- The poet says 'good night!' to the breeze which put the candle out. Seems like she has been awake past the midnight and has to go to her bed. She says to the breeze, that it little knew, how long the angels have deligently worked to keep the divine candle lighted. Here the divine candle could be her poetry. She calls the breeze as a jealous one, as it has extinguished the light.
Second stanza- The flame could have been a guiding lighthouse spark for sailors in the dark, which they earnestly want to see. Seems like she is referring her poetry as the flame and it could have been a guidance to lot of peole in the dark. But as the flame has been put out for the day, she has to say good night and go to bed.
It could have been the waning lamp that could have the been for the drummer at the military camp , leading to the reveille - military wakeup call.
Think, the second stanza could be about guiding the people (sailors) in dark to its destination or truth. It could have been the light enlighting the people with responsibility to guide the other people to revelation, reveille (resurrection) and fight for goodness. -

From guest Haq (contact)
Why the angels are working diligently? Does the celestial wick refers to the thread of life?
